about

This piece was made with samples created by me and loaded into OP-1. I think I used one OP-1 synth voice.

The approach was this. I'd had a busy weekend with not enough time to focus on music. So, rather than feel sad, angry or disappointed about it, I grabbed tools I thought would allow me to just therapeutically play around for a few minutes at the very least.

Here's the gear:
My OP-1 was full of samples I've loaded in gradually over time. Wasn't even sure what all I had in there to be honest. The OP-1 was connected to:

The blooper. This is a useful tool, but I don't feel 100% comfortable with it. As in, I never go in knowing how I'm going to use it to get to a particular goal. I think the only thought I had was that I would essentially record into loops very randomly and intuitively and not think too hard about where I was in a particular loop. To put it another way, I'd listen back to the existing loop, try something and as soon as it sounded like something that would work, I'd play it and kind of randomly press record on blooper. Sometimes long, sometimes, punching in and out rapidly.

Next up, the Strymon NightSky. I'm still getting to know this unit and how to make it do emotive, interesting things. It's deep and useful for sure, but I still feel I'm exploring it. This is a good thing. Getting lost in exploring and the process of discovery gets me into a flow state very quickly and easily.

To sum up, essentially I just started with one voice on OP-1, liked how it sounded through the NightSky setting I had going, so I recorded a longish loop. Changed voice, added something else to the loop. Added a modifier that "scrambles" the loop. Kept adding voices. Kept playing with NightSky params very slightly. Accidentally turned on the OP-1 mic at one point, but I like the kind of lowercase feel it adds to the loop.

The lesson, as always: don't have expectations, don't worry about "the right way" to use your gear, embrace discomfort and be open to joy, weirdness and delight.

So that's how I made this stuff! If you like it you can find it on my bandcamp or Spotify. I love making these videos and music, and I love having your support as well. It's important to support artists!

Sycamore Willow San Francisco, California

I love making murky music -- ambient, drones and even songs with beats. I use effects pedals, tape and other fun toys to design sounds and textures to create dreamy atmospheres. I'm forever making the soundtrack to an imagined film.
